Hi Carla - Thanks for reaching out. We know this is a hard time for students. The beginning of the year during this initial transition is usually hard for students in any year and COVID-19 certainly adds additional challenges. We are working hard to help students see they can actually do a lot of things right now! And they are encouraged to do so. I hope you will share this with your student. There are some things they can’t do certainly – go into each other’s rooms, for example. But, they can do almost everything they normally do, while adding in precautions. Do the same activities while social distancing and wearing masks. UC has over 240 events scheduled for the next month. Encourage your student to check them out on CampusLINK. And of course, they can do the usual activities that are non-UC related they might want to do with friends – go to the zoo, grab food on Calhoun St., toss the Frisbee outside, hang their hammock in hammock village, and more. It can be hard in any year to make friends - reassure them that it takes awhile, even in more typical years. It's hard sometimes to put yourself out there and introduce yourself to a friend, but it often pays off. Joining a club can help because everyone there has the same interest. Please let us know if we can help get your student connected to any of these activities. Best wishes to her this semester!
