UC Community Standards: University Living

Two beds in a residence hall room
Posted over 4 years ago .

Learning doesn’t only take place in the classroom. As a member of a residential community, students will have the opportunity to develop life skills including leadership, inclusion, community and learning. Our residential program, which is designed to ensure students become engaged citizens and experience-based learners, is guided by four core values.

Core Values

  • Leadership. Students will develop skills that enable them to lead self and others.
  • Inclusion. Students will create a community that fosters mutual understanding, respect, and a sense of belonging.
  • Community. Students will choose to engage in behaviors that reflect a commitment to themselves, their neighbors and the greater University of Cincinnati community.
  • Learning. Students will identify ways to engage in self-discovery that results in academic success and personal growth.

As a member of a residential community, students commit to creating a positive, mutually-respectful environment for themselves and their peers. Building strong community within each floor, house, and hall requires an openness to learning, a respect for the rights and needs of others, an appreciation of one another’s gifts, and a shared responsibility for the quality of life in the halls. This responsibility belongs to both staff and students.

Residence Hall Policies

University and residence hall rules exist to ensure that the priorities of the residence hall are well established and clearly understood by all. We encourage you to review UC's residence hall policies (alcohol, smoking, and medical marijuana policies, etc.) and Resident Handbook (behavioral expectations, roommate issues, disciplinary processes, etc.) with your student and discuss your expectations of their behavior and how they will ensure they are a productive and positive member of their residential community. Some questions to ask are:

  • What does it mean to be a good roommate?
  • What kind of communication will help you and your roommate have a successful living arrangement?
  • When should they reach out to their Resident Advisor (RA) or a professional staff member?

Note: More information about housing selection procedures and move-in processes is forthcoming. Following President Pinto's announcement about the fall return to campus, the Housing Office anticipates sharing specific details by early July.
