Login to CatalystA college major is a specialized area of study selected by your Bearcat. UC has a wide variety of over 300 undergraduate majors and academic programs. Following completion of their specific curriculum and major requirements, the degree they receive from UC will reflect their chosen major. For example, a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, or a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Choosing a college major may feel overwhelming to you and/or your student. They will spend a lot of time learning about the subject they choose, so it is important to give this decision thorough consideration. Additionally, you and your student are understandably considering future career and graduate school opportunities after UC. Remember that their choice of major will not lock them into a specific career for the rest of their life. If they want to continue on to graduate programs following graduation, they will want to make sure they take any required prerequisite courses. Their academic advisors will be able to help guide them toward completing the appropriate courses.
It is very common for students to consider changing majors. This is a good thing as it is important to give major decisions a significant amount of thought and reflection. Additionally, those students who have already selected a major may find they discover a new passion once they begin taking classes. Encourage your student to approach their major decision with an open mind and to reflect on their interests. What classes spark their interest most? What is it about the course that was most compelling? What topics do they find themselves discussing with friends and family?
Before changing majors, it's important to think about several factors.
At UC, we have a great team of advisors who can help your student with major decisions and the process of changing majors. The Center for Pathways Advising team can help your Bearcat navigate through campus and find direct pathways to your educational goals at the University of Cincinnati.
