Student Resources: Counseling & Psychological Services

Posted about 5 years ago .

Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS)

Students and members of the UC community concerned about students have access to mental health crisis care and consultation 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) achieves excellence through a community-based, integrated care approach to psychological services and training that creates an optimal healthy environment for students to grow psychologically, relationally, and intellectually, as they achieve wellness and academic success. The services your student receives at CAPS can take a number of forms. The decision about which type of service may be appropriate is based on many factors, including your student's current concerns and needs, their counseling history, scheduling considerations, and availability of resources. Our goal in this process is to find the best way to attend to your student's needs and concerns in the most effective and efficient way.

CAPS offers services and works within a brief therapy model. The first point of contact for most students is an Initial Consultation. During the initial consultation your student and a CAPS counselor will discuss the nature of your concerns and decide which services might be most helpful. Possible options include a seminar or workshop, peer to peer support, group or individual counseling, or referral to another office or service provider better suited to meet your student's needs. There is no cost for this consultation.

How Family Members Can Help

  • Encourage your student to download the ReachOut app before arriving at UC. You never know when your student, a friend, or someone they know will need support for mental health. Knowing the signs, so they can recognize the need for help in themselves or others and being informed of campus resources can help them navigate these challenges.
  • Review the Mental Health information in the UC Family Guide to familiarize yourself with signs of a mental health condition, how to help your student during a mental health crisis, and resources for students. The Family Guide also includes important conversations to have with your student prior to their arrival at UC.
